Merlene Ottey ranks ranks at number three on the list of the top ten all time athletes on the 200 metres – women, and number six on the 100-metre list.
The career of the Jamaican-turned-Slovenian sprinter, has now entered its fourth decade. In 2010 at 50, she became the oldest athlete to have competed at the European Championships anchoring her adopted country’s 4x100m relay team.
A season best of 11.77sec she is also the proud holder of the over-50s 100m world record, a long way off her personal best of 10.74 while running for Jamaica in 1996. She never picked up an Olympic 100m gold, achieving silver in Atlanta, but her commitment to the sport may never be seen ever again.
And at 52 still under 12s! Genuine Pace salutes you, don’t hang up the spikes for slippers any time soon.
